Virtù is the prowess to overcome the fortunes of time to achieve greatness.
A concept created by Niccolò Machiavelli in his writing The Prince in 1513.
Throughout history, only the select few in comparison to the many were able to achieve greatness in some form or another. Albert Einstein, Joan of Arc, and Leonardo Da Vinci are a some of the few. These individuals have risen from every corner of the world and have hailed from every culture that has ever existed. Despite so much diversity, they all have something very important in common: their Virtù.
Virtù is the one thing that has allowed all of them to overcome every circumstance that fortune has bestowed upon them. It is the drive, talent, or ability that allows one to achieve his or her goals in the face of adversity. It is the ability to adapt and to create opportunities or to be prepared when opportunities arise—to succeed where others have failed. They were able to do this by learning from the past as well as from those who were able to create a vision for the future—a future that eventually led them into history.
It is the decisions and—more importantly—the actions that we make everyday that will inevitably define the outcome of our own lives and the lives of others. To truly reach for greatness you must do more. You must do more than harnessing your deepest ambition; more than focusing your relentless will. You must find your Virtù.
